MARION — A blood curdling scream echoed inside Tabor Academy’s Hoyt Hall on Sunday, March 20. No one was in danger, it was just a part of a “Phantom of the Opera” medley performed by the Tri-County Symphonic Band.

The orchestra was in top form playing a selection of music by Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, including medleys from “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Evita,” “Cats” and of course, “Phantom of the Opera.”

But even though the show was in honor of Lloyd Weber, it opened with a 1911 composition by Will Huff, “The Show Boy March.”

“This was an appropriate march for this afternoon as we honor the show boy, Andrew Lloyd Weber,” said percussionist Matt Lynds.

Halfway through the concert’s second act, Chief Musician with the United States Coast Guard Charlie Suriyakham joined the orchestra as a featured soloist. He played clarinet on Luigi Bassi’s “Concert Fantasia on motives from ‘Rigoletto.’”

According to Music Director Philip Sanborn, Suriyakham is a “fan favorite” and this is his second time performing with the Tri-County Symphonic Orchestra.

“It’s easy to dismiss a lot of music that happens in this small town of Marion, but [Suriyakham] is world class,” said Sanborn, who added that Suriyakham would play for the remainder of the concert.

“In a weak moment [Suriyakham] agreed to play ‘Phantom of the Opera’ with us because he loves [the show].”

Suriyakham and the entire orchestra received standing ovations from the audience throughout the performance.

“There were sparks coming off his fingers,” remarked Sippican School teacher and orchestra member Hannah Moore, referring to Suriyakham’s playing.
