First Congregational Church of Rochester begins new phase of restoration
ROCHESTER — After successfully completing renovations on the vestry building last year, the First Congregational Church of Rochester has begun a second phase of restoration on its building.
This new phase of the project is focused on the church’s sanctuary, as workers use scaffolding inside the area to install new siding.
This new siding is the first step in giving the full structure a “facelift” to extend the 189-year-old building’s longevity, usefulness and beauty. Eventually, the project will include restoration of the bell tower, windows, front steps and portico.
The congregation was established in 1703, and has occupied the present building since 1837. It is the oldest building on the common.
While funds have been raised to start the work, additional funds are needed to complete all elements of the restoration. Tax-deductible contributions can be made online at rochestercongregational.com or mailed to P.O. Box 98, Rochester, MA 02770.
