Letter to the editor: We the People need to stand up
“The Constitution of the United States is the final refuge of every right that is enjoyed by any American. So long as it is observed, those rights will be secure. Whenever it falls into disrespect or disrepute, the end of orderly organized government, as we have known it for more than one hundred and twenty-five years, will be at hand. The Constitution represents a government of law. There is only one other form of authority, and that is a government of force. Americans must make their choice between these two. One signifies justice and liberty; the other tyranny and oppression.”
These words were written one hundred years ago by Calvin Coolidge, a Republican lawyer from Massachusetts and the 30th president of the United States.
Never have they seemed more prophetic than in the context of what we are witnessing today from a reckless and corrupt administration that has, at its head, a man who openly admits that he has no respect for the law but is guided by his own “morality”.
We are living in a dangerous time. I don’t believe most Americans think that we have an orderly organized government.
We are on the wrong path. Our NATO allies certainly think so too. We need change. Urgently.
Congress has utterly failed us. For change to happen it will have to come from the bottom up.
We can’t continue to live our lives as though none of this is happening. It should not even be a partisan issue.
This president is a scoundrel, is clearly unstable and is unfit for office. His erratic behavior has given rise to concern that he is developing signs of dementia.
His actions are hurting our country now and it could get a lot worse.
We have all been too passive for too long. The Constitution is a living document only if We, the People stand up for our rights!
Don Cuddy,
Mattapoisett
