Marion’s Mary Celeste granted full entertainment license

MARION — The Marion Select Board voted at a Nov. 2 meeting to grant a full entertainment license for the Mary Celeste Whiskey and Wine Library.

The restaurant was previously granted a provisional license in July over concerns from some neighbors who worried about the volume level of live music.

However, since the provisional license was granted, no complaints have been filed with Marion Police about the noise level at the business, according to Town Administrator Jay McGrail.

“We’ve always made a commitment to the community to keep noise at a reasonable volume,” said Owner Mike Achilles.

Achilles said he checked noise levels with a decibel meter each time live music was hosted at the restaurant. While the noise couldn’t be entirely limited to the restaurant’s patio, Achilles said he spoke to neighbors and found no one who described the noise as “intrusive.”

Additionally, Achilles said he decided to stop renting the space out for private events on the patio after one group got too noisy. Events at the restaurant end at 9 p.m.

The Select Board verified that the license would need to be renewed annually, to provide recourse in case the events become disruptive in the future.

However, Select Board Member John Waterman urged neighbors to reach out to Achilles with any complaints before taking it up with the Select Board.
