Marion Natural History Museum to present the Secret World of Fireflies
Jun 29, 2026
Event Date
MARION — The Marion Natural History Museum will host a program on fireflies Wednesday, July 15, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Fireflies have existed for an estimated 75 to 130 million years, sharing the Earth with dinosaurs long before artificial light changed the night sky. Each firefly species communicates through its own distinct light pattern, and decoding those patterns can help identify the roughly 170 species found in North America.
The program will explore the ancient history of fireflies, the science behind their light displays and the challenges the insects face today, including declining sightings reported across the region.
Registration is required at marionmuseum.org.
