New marine facility plans ‘a good compromise,’ Harbormaster says

MARION — The town’s new Harbormaster Building could be a lot smaller than originally proposed, after new plans were released Tuesday.

Harbormaster Isaac Perry said the new plans were a “good compromise” that would help break the project into smaller pieces.

The original plans were for a large building, closely resembling the Tabor oceanography lab. But designs were changed after input from community members, officials and an opinion piece by Selectman John Waterman last fall, which called the building a “Taj Mahal on Sippican Harbor.”

Now, public bathrooms and a six-foot raised walkway have been removed from the plans in a response to feedback from the initial plans’ unveiling in September.

“I think it addresses a lot of the concerns we heard that night,” Perry said.

Instead of having public bathrooms inside the new facility — as was originally planned — the standalone bathrooms adjacent to the existing Harbormaster facility will remain, while the rest of the old building will be demolished.

New plans have no replacement for the originally proposed viewing deck. Instead, that space is slated to remain open.

Though, Perry said, putting in that proposed viewing deck sometime down the line isn’t out of the question.

“The long and short of it is we’re leaving that as a future potential project,” the Harbormaster said.

The Harbormaster’s office will remain above a base flood elevation of around 12.5 feet, as was originally planned.

Between the bathrooms and decking, Perry said the project’s square footage has been drastically reduced.

“[If] you look at the square footage alone, it’s basically cut in half,” Perry said.

He said the new plans for the project are tackling the facility in smaller portions than were originally planned.

“It’s just breaking the project up into small pieces,” Perry said.

A public meeting about the proposed facility will be held on April 26 at 6 p.m.
