Old Colony students launch fundraiser for NASA culinary competition
ROCHESTER — Culinary students at Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School may have developed out-of-this-world chicken tacos.
They will travel to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas to present a dish they designed for astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The school has partnered with area restaurants for a fundraiser to offset the cost of this trip and competition expenses.
Seniors Ryan Eby, Leah Hollenbeck, Justin Ielo and Anthony Rampino will represent their team — one of ten nationwide teams selected — at the final round of the NASA HUNCH Culinary Challenge. The competition asked students to design nutritious, shelf-stable meals suitable for space travel.
The group will travel to Houston in late April, where they will prepare and present their Indian-inspired chicken vindaloo tacos.
Patrons of Mamma Mia’s, ThreeV and Carmela’s can choose to round up their purchase to support the team through April 22.
