Old Rochester Boys Soccer defeats Lynnfield in 3-0 playoff match
MATTAPOISETT — Old Rochester Regional High School’s Varsity Boys Soccer kicked it into high gear during their first MIAA playoff game of the post-season, defeating Lynnfield High School on their home field with a score of 3-0 on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
“I think they just played really, really hard — like they competed really hard throughout the entire game,” he said. “When we do that, we can play soccer with anybody,” said Head Coach and Old Rochester Principal Michael Devoll.
The players attributed their victory to strong teamwork.
“I think it’s just our chemistry. We connected a lot of passes, and we were very happy after every goal. I just love to see that with our team,” said Captain Noah Thorell, a senior and defensive player.
Thorell and fellow captain Sebastian Romig, a senior and midfielder, said it felt “great” to win.
“We finished in the box and we scored,” said Romig.
Devoll said that the team finished strong in their regular season, defeating West Bridgewater High School on Oct. 27.
“We talked to the guys about that’s the level we have to play at,” said Devoll.
Heading into the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs, the team was ranked 7 in the Division 3 league with a record of 11-6 with 3 ties.
As the team prepares for their sweet 16 match against North Reading High School on Saturday, Nov. 8, the captains emphasized that there’s still more to improve upon.
“I think we could have scored a lot more goals today, so I think that’s a big thing. And also our sportsmanship,” said Thorell.
With 10 seniors on the team, Devoll was happy to see them “all contribute in some way or another.”
“I’m happy for them … [This is] a great school event for the community. I’m proud of the group.”
The team’s next match against North Reading on Nov. 8 will take place at Old Rochester at 5 p.m.
