Old Rochester Environmental Club breaks down plan to save food waste
MATTAPOISETT — The Environmental Club will put worms to work as Old Rochester Regional High School introduces a new composting program.
Echo Hollis presented the club’s plan for a composting program to the School Committee on Thursday, March 26.
Hollis said the club’s goal is increasing biodiversity and sustainability across campus, and the group advocates for and educates the student body about environmental protection.
“We're trying to be an example that will better our future for the entire campus,” Hollis said.
According to Hollis’s presentation, food scraps from the high school kitchen will be brought to compost bins outside and used in the garden soil.
Hollis said the group’s long-term goal is to collect scraps from the staff, student body and cafeteria.
Old Rochester High School Principal Michael Devoll introduced the students and club to the School Committee and gave them his approval.
“They have my full support,” Devoll said.
The Environmental Club is supported by multiple grants from the Mattapoisett Land Trust.
