Youth basketball tryouts come to Mattapoisett
MATTAPOISETT — Youth basketball tryouts are coming to Old Hammondtown School at 20 Shaw St. this spring.
The SNE Cannons will hold the first round of tryouts for area athletes free of charge, with no membership fees required to participate.
The girls team will hold tryouts Friday, Jan. 9 from 6-6:45 p.m. for grades five and six, from 7-7:45 p.m.for grades seven and eight, and will announce the time for high schoolers at a later date.
The boys team will hold tryouts Friday, Jan. 16 from 6-6:45 p.m. for fourth through sixth graders, 7-7:45 p.m. for seventh and eighth graders, and the high school time will be announced.
Higher-level athletes can try out Sunday, Jan. 11 at 1:30 p.m. for ages 16 and under and an unannounced time for varsity.
The program was started by David Arancio, of Rochester, and Kevin Edwards, of Lakeville two years ago when they decided to fill a hole they saw in affordable amateur athletics in the area.
“We wanted it to be a nonprofit, and we wanted to give kids a place to play, a fair place to play, and even the playing ground,” Edwards said.
Players can register for tryouts at www.snecannons.org.
