Conservation Commission supports wetland bylaw

Apr 14, 2015

After a discussion on Monday night, the Conservation Commission voted 3-1 to support a new wetland bylaw at Town Meeting.

The bylaw, originally verbatim to one adopted by Freetown, has gone through a few minor revisions since the commission originally posted it online.

Town Counsel has yet to review the bylaw, and Chair Bob Rogers said he would like to hear from Selectmen on the issue.

But to make sure the bylaw was submitted in time to be on the May Town Meeting agenda, the commission went ahead and took the vote.

A public hearing to discuss it is still scheduled for April 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The bylaw is a much simpler version than one proposed by the commission several years ago.

That multi-page version was shot down by Town Meeting voters.

The newer one is aimed at giving the town more control over wetlands decisions, which have often been overturned by the state.

Resident Paul Osenkowski said he isn’t generally in favor of more government regulations, but wants such issues to stay in the town.

“It’s time the town had a little more say in how we direct our lives,” he said.

Ray Andrews, a former Selectman, said if a bylaw had been passed years ago, some of the current issues faced by the town might not have happened.

He agreed with Osenkowski that the town, not the state, is the best one to make decisions for Mattapoisett.

“We know what’s best in Mattapoisett, not the bureaucrats,” Andrews said.

He added that the bylaw “has been a long time coming.”

Commission member Mike King opposed the vote to support the bylaw.
