Bulldogs frozen out 21-30 in sectional championship

The Old Rochester Regional Bulldogs received any icy shut-out during on November 10, losing to Middleborough 21-30.

The game was the South Division 6 championship of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association's state tournament. The Bulldogs, who defeated Rockland and Norwell in the quarterfinals and semifinals, were hoping for a victory that would propel them further into the state tournament.

Alas, it was not to be. At half-time, the score was 7-14, in favor of the Middleborough Sachems. Temperatures had plunged to a relatively cold 27 degrees, and an icy wind blew continually. Many Old Rochester fans listened to the announcements from their cars; those who remained on the field were wrapped up like mummies, with several clutching blankets.

As play resumed, Middleborough leapt to a stronger lead, scoring a touchdown early in the third quarter, followed by a successful point. That brought the score to 7-21.

Bulldog Will Garcia scored a touchdown later in the third quarter; a two-point conversion attempt was blocked, leaving the score 13-21. The Sachems were awarded a safety during the third quarter as well, which tallied the score going into the fourth quarter at 13-23.

A short ways into the fourth quarter, the Sachems pulled off another touchdown, and another successful point; the score was 13-30, with time running on the clock.

The Bulldogs didn't back down; late in the fourth quarter, senior Harry Smith scored the team's final touchdown. A two-point conversion was successful. The final score of the game was 21-30.

The Bulldogs will play their final game of the season against Apponequet on Thanksgiving Day, November 23. The location of the game has not yet been announced on the Bulldog's online schedule.
