Seniors show off artwork at Council on Aging

The Marion Council on Aging kicked off ArtWeek with an artist’s reception on Friday afternoon, showcasing more than 50 works of art from local seniors.

Marion resident Mary Ross decided to help organize the event when she heard about the other events the Marion Art Center had scheduled for ArtWeek.

“I decided to do something with the seniors because I am one,” she laughed. “I knew the talent was there. I’m an artist myself.”

The rules for the gallery were simple – nobody under 55 could show work.

“This shows that seniors can be productive and creative,” Ross said.

This was the first art show the Marion COA has held, but Ross hopes it’s not the last.

“I hope we’re going to continue doing it,” she said. “Now we’ve got the equipment to hang work installed and we have a nice little team to organize.”

Artists weren’t required to be from Marion to show their work, but Ross said most of the artists were at least from nearby. The works will be up at the senior center for a month, and most are available for purchase.

“People are welcome to come by anytime,” Ross said.
