Mattapoisett gets ready for Harbor Days

Jul 5, 2018

It began as a simple strawberry festival about 40 years ago. It's grown and evolved into a weeklong celebration of food, crafts, fitness and more.

But Harbor Days -- to be held this year from July 15 to 22 in Shipyard Park -- still serves up strawberries in the form of 1,100 to 1,800 individual strawberry shortcakes.

Organized by the Mattapoisett Lions Club, Harbor Days taps the time and talent of more than 100 volunteers, and draws visitors from across the South Coast and beyond. Not surprisingly, it's the service organization's largest fundraiser of the year.

“We’ve never had anybody say they didn’t enjoy it,” said Mattapoisett King Lion Amy Mello. She was speaking of the signature shortcakes, but the same might apply to the craft show, triathlon, lobster fest or full slate of entertainment.

As a past raffle volunteer, Mello has identified a variety of area codes from across the country on the tickets. Last winter, a man from California stopped by her office to pick up his “You Pick Em’” auction item from previous Harbor Days.

“They do … They come from all over,” she said.
