Marion Fourth of July Parade a hit

Jul 4, 2011

The Fourth of July Parade was a hit with both the crowd and the entrants according to parade chairman Rodney Hunt. With around 78 participants including classic cars, go-karts, horses and floats, residents and children lined the streets to take in the festivities. And, of course, to get some candy.

Among those in the crowd were John and Christina Almy with their kids Chase and Serena in tow.

“We love the parade,” John said. “It’s a lot of fun. Cool cars, neat tractors and it’s always good to see the veterans. It’s always well put together.”

Rochester Herring Inspector Dave Watling and his mother Louise participated by driving in their 1930 Model A Ford. Watling has owned it since 1961, but it was originally his father’s. In fact, it was the same car Watling’s parents drove on their first date.

“It’s a neat thing,” Watling said about being in the parade. “I just like seeing all the people. You get the same faces each year, and some new ones.”

After the parade, awards were given to entries in particular classes. The best overall entry went to the Girl Scouts caravan, who were handed a large trophy and check for $100.
