Bulldogs bounce back

Jan 7, 2014

The Old Rochester Boy's basketball team ended its two-game skid by defeating the Lions of Pope John Paul II High School 55-41 Monday night in Mattapoisett.

The Bulldogs, coming off a tough defeat to Fairhaven, needed a win to end their two-game losing streak and to get their rhythm back. The team's 3-0 start to the season was quickly dismissed by teams in the area with a big defeat in Wareham and a close loss to a young Fairhaven team.

The ORR boys had all the motivation they needed Monday night with their home court winning streak on the line.

The Bulldogs got off to a hot start, going on a 9-0 run to begin the game with solid defensive stops in the opening minutes. Pope John snuck back into the game, cutting the deficit to 13-11, but the Bulldogs were able to once again gain control and go into halftime with a 22-13 lead.

Neither team shot well on the night, but the Bulldogs limited the Lions' scoring chances by making them settle for long shots. Offensive put-backs and points off turnovers were what gave the Bulldogs most of their points. The game didn't get close at all in the 3rd and 4th quarters, and the team comfortably took its 4th win of the season, making its record 4-2 (2-2 in the SCC).

Old Rochester received major contributions from the three starting seniors. Jeremy Bare led the team with 17 points to go along with a good amount of defensive rebounds. Despite a poor shooting night, Paul Graves also contributed with 8 points and a lot of steals and deflections leading to Lion turnovers. The biggest player in this game for the Bulldogs was Captain Michael Pruchnik, who scored 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds, a lot of which came on the offensive end.

The Bulldogs' next game is home against Dighton-Rehoboth on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 6:30 p.m.
