Bulldogs end 22-game losing streak against Wareham

Jan 30, 2014

To help break an 11-year losing streak against Wareham, Old Rochester Regional High School basketball Coach Steve Carvalho looked to the past.

Before the Tuesday, Jan. 28 game, Carvalho showed players the ball from his father’s last game as a coach at ORR. Written on it was the score of a victory over Wareham from many years ago. Inspired, the team played with heart and beat Wareham 63-55.

This is the Bulldogs first win against Wareham in 23 games over 11 years. Not only was it the team's first win against Wareham, but was also Carvalho’s first win against Wareham as head coach.

The win puts the Bulldogs into first place in the South Coast Conference with six conference games remaining in the season. This was also the tenth win of the season for the Bulldogs who clinched a spot in the playoffs.

Wareham’s 6-1 conference record had it in first place while ORR’s 8-2 record made them a lock for second place.

A shot at the South Coast Conference title was at risk for the Bulldogs.

Old Rochester had lost the previous matchup against Wareham 61-42, but came into this game on a six-game win streak playing some of the best basketball in the conference.

At the end of the first quarter the game was tied 13-13. The closely contested first quarter proved to everyone in attendance that this was going to be a great game.

In the second quarter, Wareham began to pull away and with four minutes left in the second quarter the Bulldogs found themselves down 11 points. It looked as though this game would be no different than their last meeting. However, ORR went on a 9-3 run to end the first half. The score at halftime was 31-28.

Old Rochester came out of halftime and continued their run to tie the game at 31 with five minutes left in the third quarter. Wareham went into the final quarter up three with the crowd going crazy for the home team. The Bulldogs outscored Wareham 22-11 in the final frame. Key steals down the stretch from Jordan Menard and Michael Pruchnik, as well as some clutch free throw shooting from captain Jeremy Bare, gave the Bulldogs the win.

The student section was the team’s “sixth man” cheering on the Bulldogs throughout the game. ORR is unbeaten at home this year.
