Old Rochester boys basketball rolls over Bishop Stang
The Old Rochester Boys basketball team opened the 2013-14 season Saturday afternoon at Bishop Stang in Dartmouth. The bulldogs are poised to have a very successful season and contend for the SCC crown. The team's first test was an out of conference rivalry game against the Spartans.
The Bulldogs set the tone right from the tip, dictating the pace of the game and playing lock down defense. They pulled out to an early 10 point lead in the second quarter. The transition game of Old Rochester was too much for the Spartans to handle. Key steals on the defensive end by Paul Graves and Jordan Menard lead to some easy baskets. The Bulldogs went into halftime leading by 11.
Strong rebounding and some good three point shooting kept Bishop Stang at bay in the second half. The Bulldogs played great defense giving up only a few easy baskets. Coach Steve Carvalho was thrilled with how his team played in their first game. The final score was 59-46 giving the Bulldogs their first win of the season.
The Bulldogs were lead by Senior Paul Graves who recorded 19 points to go along with six steals. Junior Jordan Menard was also a key contributor scoring 10 points including two-three pointers. Old Rochester's big man, Senior Captain Jeremy Bare chipped in with five points and lead the teams on defense with a game high five blocks. Junior Raekwon Phillips and Jordan Menard shut down the Stang shooters which was a big factor in the win. The Bulldogs travel to Swansea on Wednesday to take on Case High School in their first conference game of the year
