Old Rochester Boy's Soccer Celebrates Senior Night With 10th Win of the Season
The Old Rochester boy's soccer team had their last game of the regular season Monday night under the lights in Mattapoisett. The Bulldogs faced off against a struggling Bourne team who didn't give the Bulldogs any problems in the previous meeting earlier in the season. It was also senior night for the team as the parents and seniors were honored before the game with flowers and family pictures.
The Bulldogs came out a little slow in the first few minutes of the game. The senior laden starting lineup was stringing together some good passes but seemed to be losing the ball a lot in the offensive third. About 20 minutes into the game Old Rochester got their first breakthrough of the night when senior forward Alden Truesdale deflected a ball of the Bourne goal keeper. The deflected ball landed right at the feet of senior midfielder Robby Magee, who passed the ball right past the Bourne goalie and defensemen from just inside the penalty box. Both teams had scoring chances but the half ended 1-0
The second half was very similar to the first. The Bulldogs seemed in control but were not satisfied with only one goal. Finally, 15 minutes before the end of the game senior forward Jack smith slammed home a corner kick from freshman midfielder Luke Muther sealing the win for the Bulldogs. Just before time expired Bourne was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Sophomore goalie Melvin Vincent extended and saved the penalty maintaining the Bulldogs shutout. An extraordinary play from one of the best goalies in the south coast.
It was a great night for soccer as the seniors said goodbye to the field on which they made so many great memories this year. It was a successful regular season for the Bulldogs, giving Coach Mike Devoll his best record ever going into the tournament. All the seniors played very well for their last home game as well as goalie Melvin Vincent, defenseman Brett Noone, and midfielder Mason DaSilva. Old Rochester awaits the tournament schedule which is expected to come out next week.
