Old Rochester Boys Soccer Stuns Voc 2-1

Oct 5, 2013

The Old Rochester boy's soccer team, coming off a tie with 2nd place Apponequet, faced a tough battle in New Bedford on October 4th. There was a good showing on the turf at New Bedford Voc as the game kicked off. About midway through the first half after a lot of back and forth play, senior forward Jack Smith took the ball down the sideline towards the New Bedford goal. Smith drilled a cross into the Voc penalty box that was buried by senior forward Paul Graves.

An upset seemed to be on the minds of the Bulldogs after a good finish to the first half. Old Rochester coach Mike Devoll pleaded at half time for his team to not let up and prove that they are the best team in the conference. The Bulldogs took that message into the second half. Despite being bombarded by the now offense minded Bears senior captain Robby Magee (who was moved back to sweeper) and goalie Melvin Vincent held strong keeping the bears at bay. Mid way through the second half Robby Magee stepped up to take a free kick a few yards outside the Bears penalty area. Magee fired a shot and the ball took a bad bounce just in front of the goalie and snuck in the bottom corner.

Up 2-0 on the League leaders the Bulldogs started to play very defensively and Voc started attacking with everything they had. After a missed penalty shot by the Bears it seemed like it was ORR's day. The Bears ended up getting one back late in the second half after some poor marking on a corner kick. Finally after the last frantic minutes the referee's blew the whistle and the upset was complete.

The Bulldogs stormed the field rushing goalie Melvin Vincent after one of his best performances of the year. The whole team was smiles as they walked off the field 2-1 winners in one of the best games so far this year for the Bulldogs. Senior defenseman Chris Carando continued his string of good games. The Bulldogs also got great contributions from senior forward Paul Graves, junior defensemen Ryan Beatty and Mike Pelligrino, and senior captain Alden Truesdale. It was an all around team effort that led Old Rochester to a now 7-2-3 record and within 1 point of qualifying for the state playoffs.
