Peter and the Wolf Two Ways This Weekend

Oct 31, 2019

On November 2 & 3, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Yaniv Dinur, presents an all-Prokofiev concert weekend at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center (684 Purchase St., New Bedford) with a Saturday evening classical concert and a Sunday family matinee.

On Saturday, November 2, at 7:30pm, the NBSO presents Prokofiev Rules. The program includes Prokofiev’s two violin concertos featuring Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, the suite from Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet, and a new narration of one of the most popular classical pieces in the world, Peter and the Wolf. The NBSO commissioned writer/narrator James VanDemark to bring a fresh perspective to the narration, and he describes his new work this way: “First, this Peter and the Wolf is a very tongue in cheek, contemporary realization of Prokofiev's original story. It is narrated by the Wolf (me), the much maligned victim, and is a tale of ‘red meat, stiff drinks, and serious crime.’ Nonetheless, vegetarians will be welcome....”

Dinur and Kutik will present a pre-concert talk on the program at 6:30pm in the Penler Space (adjoining The Z), free and open to the public. Concert sponsor is Burke & Lamb, P.C.

On Sunday, November 3, at 2:30pm, the NBSO presents Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf Family Concert featuring the Magic Circle Mime Company, regarded as one of today’s premier family attractions with performances that blend the concert orchestra with visual theater. The matinee will be an exciting musical adventure for the young and young at heart! Exclusive concert sponsor is Hawthorn Medical Associates.
