Wareham Land Trust Sponsors Program on Rescuing Endangered Sea Turtles

May 7, 2013

On Saturday, May 11, 10:00AM - 12:00PM, Don Lewis, aka the "Turtle Guy" and Sue Wieber Nourse, will transform Wareham’s First Congregational Church at 11 Gibbs Ave. into the storm-tossed Atlantic coastline through the magic of digital media. Adventurers from 5 to 95 will experience first-hand the thrill of rescuing the world’s most endangered sea turtles. We’ll jump inside a dazzling sound and light show, unleash our inner explorer and come face to face with five species of sea turtles along the ocean shore.  We'll rescue a half ton leviathan, a massive female leatherback, entangled in Cape Cod Bay. We’ll patrol windswept beaches on the coldest, darkest, most dangerous nights of November and December to rescue hundreds of the helpless tropical and semi-tropical sea turtles.

Tragically, the hook of Cape Cod has become a lethal trap for ocean critters. Sea turtle stranding season arrives each year in November. Juvenile sea turtles instinctively know to head south to warmer climes but sadly they become trapped in the bay with no escape by a wall of ocean water too cold for reptiles to pass .  Eventually the water reaches critical temperature and these turtles become cold-stunned and strand on bayside beaches in fall storms. Hypothermia grips as frigid winds plunge body temperatures to freezing; death follows quickly if turtles are not recovered by intrepid rescuers. The Turtle Journal team will share their personal experiences with sea turtle rescues and talk about this global stranding hotspot.
