MATTAPOISETT — In front of a full house at Old Rochester Regional High School, the school’s unified basketball team capped off its second consecutive undefeated season with a victory over a team of Tri-Town first responders on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

The Bulldogs had already sealed victory as the final seconds of the game ticked down, but Thomas Jupin gave the crowd one final moment to cheer for as he sank a shot as the buzzer sounded.

Jupin was quickly surrounded by members of both teams in celebration.

The Unified Sports program in Massachusetts, run by Special Olympics Massachusetts in partnership with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, allows students with disabilities the opportunity to play high school sports alongside their peers.

Before the game, Bulldog player Emilia Cantwell was honored at center court as she was playing in her final home game.

Cantwell has played on the team since it was founded in 2019. She was presented with a t-shirt by the team of first responders.

Head Coach Emma Fenton said it was fitting that Cantwell’s last game was against police officers because she is a big supporter of Tri-Town police departments.

“Emilia loves everything about being a Bulldog and shares scores, the team record, game schedule and what time the bus is leaving with anyone and everyone,” said Fenton. “I speak for all of us when I say we will miss Emilia's smile, jokes, stories and her love for all people.”

As Cantwell played in the annual matchup for the final time, Rochester Police Chief Michael Assad made his debut.

“This is amazing,” said Assad. “I can’t wait to do it again next year. It's great to be able to do events like these with these great athletes and it's an honor to be here.”

Assad said he plans to spend some time working on his jump shot before the two teams meet again.

After the game, Bulldog players received trophies honoring their successful season. Each police department received a runner-up trophy.
