‘101 Dalmatians’ comes to Marion

Cruella De Vil has her eyes on the pups of Marion.

On Friday, the First Congregational Church of Marion performed “101 Dalmatians” as part of a two-night fundraiser to benefit the church.

The musical follows the wicked, fur-loving De Vil as she attempts to kidnap the spotted pups all in the name of fashion.

Church member Wendy Bidstrup is at the helm of the production that includes 40 children (“the puppies”) and 20 adults.

Having previously directed performances of “101 Dalmatians” for the Marion Art Center, Bidstrup said the musical was the perfect kind of family show.

“It’s a great multigenerational show and that’s what we were looking for,” Bidstrup said. “It’s a church family operation. We have a fabulous cast of adults. I knew we would have wonderful children.”

Musical director Sandy Morgan commended the church members as well as the community for volunteering for the production.

“With the help of church members, we’ve turned this into a massive fundraiser,” Morgan said. “We have food, baskets donated by church members and we’re sold out both nights.”

So how hard is it to wrangle 40 kids, er puppies, between the ages of seven and 12 to belt out a song or two?

Not too hard according to the cast and crew.

“We don’t memorize things as easily as the children,” said adult cast member Jeff Hallahan. “They’re like sponges.”

Morgan agreed.

“Everyone has been awesome,” she said. “They have completely memorized their lines and have been on the ball.”
