‘Truck-warming’ event allows business to blossom

MATTAPOISETT — Planting the seeds to her own success on Dec. 22, Suzanne Bellanger debuted her flower truck to the world in front of the Town Wharf General Store in Mattapoisett.

Come spring, Bellanger will be hitting the road with her newly outfitted 1965 Volkswagen Single Cab truck, but she gave the tri-town a preview of her new business on Saturday.

“I think we’ve had a really good turnout and people seem really excited about it,” said Bellanger, a Marion resident. “I think it’s a great addition to the south coast because it’s something different.”

Bellanger, a UMass Dartmouth graduate, said she discovered floral design only after taking a professional course on a whim 15 years ago in Boston. Now, she’s busily helping customers select floral arrangements from her truck.

“It feels amazing, every time I actually look at the truck I can’t believe it’s real because I’ve had this vision in my head for so long. To see it actually come together is a pretty good feeling,” she said.

Though it threatened to rain throughout the day, customers lined up to grab some flowers, see the outfitted truck, and take pictures with the picture-perfect vehicle. The positive response from the community also provided hope that the business will prosper when it eventually hits the road in the spring.

“It’s been terrific, a lot of friends and family have been coming by, and people in the village have come by and wished us luck,” said Marc Bellanger, Suzanne’s husband. “It’s a good way to kick it off and today gives us a lot of confidence that there is going to interest.”

Suzanne and her flower truck will be visiting spots like the general store when the business is fully operational, but will also stop at local farmers’ markets and other shops.
