5K runners take to the streets in tiaras and tutus

May 12, 2014

Young Ella Fisher had a great reason for attending the Women’s Fund Tiara 5K: "I like wearing tutus."

Held on Mother's Day for eight years, the event is a safe place for tutus and tiaras alike. Hundreds gathered again this year to support the Women's Fund's mission to advance the educational attainment and economic security of women and girls in Southeastern Massachusetts.

This year was the first tiara race for many.

"I wanted to donate to the cause and have a good time on Mother's Day," said Tatum Peterson.

Peterson came with a number of other moms, all wearing "queen bee" shirts. The women said their husbands and kids would meet them at the finish line.

Liz Delfino, who has attended several races, said she recruited mothers, godmothers and surrogate mothers for the race.

"I got all mothers together," said Delfino, of Somerville.

Delfino was joined by friends Marianne Kasica, Dorothy McQuillan and Johanna Riley, who all sported tiaras for the race.

Husband Joe, however, chose pirate-themed head wear instead.

"[Liz] tried to give me a real tiara, but this is as close as I was going to get today," he joked.

The race started out with two rounds of fun runs for kids followed by the main event.

Matt Sylvain of Dartmouth came in first place, followed by Adam Sylvia of Rochester in second and Matthew Howard of Swansea in third place. The complete race results are located here.
