Albert J. “Sonny” Weigel, Sr., 75

Albert J. “Sonny” Weigel, Sr., 75, of Rochester, died January 28 in Tobey Hospital, Wareham with his family at his side. He was the husband of Marie E. (Balzarini) Weigel and the son of the late Albert J. and Isabel (Bettencourt) Weigel.

He was born in Acushnet and lived in Rochester most of his life.

He graduated from New Bedford Vocational High School. Mr. Weigel served in the United States Coast Guard from 1959 to 1963.

Mr. Weigel worked for Bay State Piping in Hyannis for 29 years before retiring. He was a proud member of the Local Laborer’s Union #385 in New Bedford.

He was a long time member of the Rochester Fire Department retiring as Captain.

He was a member of the Plymouth County Firefighters and Forest Warden’s Association. He loved working in his garden, hunting and being outdoors. But what mattered most at the end of the day was his family. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren dearly.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marie E. (Balzarini) Weigel; three sons, Albert J. Weigel and his wife, Louise; Peter J. Weigel and his wife, Jamie, and Gregory S. Weigel and his wife, Melissa, all of Rochester; six grandchildren, Karissa Deree and her husband, Nathan, of Acushnet; Nicholas, Katelyn, Angela, Joseph and Owen Weigel, all of Rochester.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1, in the First Congregational Church, 11 Constitution Way, Rochester. Burial will follow in Sherman Cemetery, Rochester.

Visiting hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham.
