American Legion celebrates Memorial Day

MATTAPOISETT — The American Legion found small ways to recognize Memorial Day without drawing crowds and being unsafe.

A small gathering of veterans met at the Mattapoisett Library to place wreaths on the war memorials there, but decided not to publicize the occasion to avoid crowds.

Legion members then moved to Shipyard Park to hear George Randall recite the Gettysburg Address and raise the town’s flag from half mast to full mast at noon on Memorial Day.

The final part of the ceremony was to march to the wharf to throw a bouquet of flowers into the bay in memoriam to the sailors, of all types, who have perished at sea.

“Thanks to all who spent a moment, or two, on Memorial Day in remembrance of all those special souls we honor on this special day,” wrote Moe Molander, on behalf of the Legion.
