Annual historical society meeting to feature Pulitzer Prize-winning author

Jun 3, 2016

The Sippican Historical Society will have its annual meeting on Thursday, June 9 at 7 p.m. at the Marion Music Hall.

Long-time Marion summer resident and Pulitzer Prize winning author Caroline Elkins will be presenting her lecture “Empire on Trial” at the meeting. The lecture focuses on the stark realities of British colonial rule, specifically in Kenya.

Elkins was awarded the Pulitzer in the general non-fiction category for her book “Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain’s Gulag in Kenya.” In the book she outlines how the British relied on violence, torture and cover-ups to maintain colonial rule. It also looks at the 2009 lawsuit filed in the High Court of London against the British government by Kenyans who had been tortured during the Mau Mau rebellion in the 1950s, a trial in which Elkins served as an expert witness.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
