Annual Turkey Trot attracts hundreds of runners
Runners donned turkey hats and other festive garb for the fourth annual Guard Oil 5K Turkey Trot Sunday morning.
More than 400 runners, spectators and walkers arrived at Tabor Academy for the race that winds through the village.
Hosted by the Marion Recreation Department, event proceeds are used to fund department programs and activities.
“This is one of our better years,” department Director Jody Dickerson said. “We had three hundred eighty runners sign up.”
With some sun and the thermostat registering 50 degrees, Dickerson said the weather was beautiful compared to last year, which featured freezing temperatures.
Runners are encouraged to dress up for the race and many wore turkey hats.
In addition to her turkey-themed hat, Angela Francois of Acushnet wore a brown skirt to add some flair to her outfit.
Nathan Meleo and his daughter Natalie ignored the bird-theme, but got into the spirit by wearing matching Superman T-shirts for the race.
For Nathan, this was his third year running, but a first for his daughter.
“Last year I ran and pushed her in a stroller,” he said. “Now she’s old enough to run it on her own.”
Ray Shield of Marion finished first in the 5K with a time of 19:10. Rochester’s Roy Dasilva came in second with a time of 19:35. Tom Gelson of Marion finished third with a time of 19:49. Evan Tilley came in fourth and ran the race with a time of 19:52.
