Anonymous donor gives $25,000 to Sippican School

For the second year in a row an anonymous donor has gifted $25,000 to Sippican School.

School Committee members voted to accept the donation, which goes into the Principal’s Fund for Donations.

Principal Lyn Rivet told committee members that part of last year’s donation was spent on a variety of items including iPads for students, field trips and equipment for the school’s nurse office.

Committee member Christine Winters said the donation was “extremely generous,” but asked if it should be earmarked for a specific purpose. The money was donated with the caveat that it be spent to bring the most benefit to children. Rivet is the person who determines how to spend the funds.

“To have a policy that is more defined on how these funds are spent would be worthy of a discussion,” Winters said.

Chair Joseph Scott disagreed, and said the money was spent “wisely.”

“Do we need to put more parameters on it? I don’t believe so,” he said. “My fear is that when you set up parameters those donors go away. I don’t think we should do anything to jeopardize that.”

The committee voted 4-1 to accept the donation. Winters said she “regretfully” voted against the donation.
