Anti-violence program proposed for ORR students

Giving teens the tools to handle violence is a topic Old Rochester Regional High School Principal Mike Devoll believes his students need in their lives now and after they graduate.

On Wednesday, Devoll proposed bringing the Katie Brown Educational Program to high school students in April.

The foundation of the same name began after a 20-year-old Rhode Island woman was murdered by her on again, off again boyfriend in 2001. Through a three-part training, students learn about the issue of relational violence.

“I think it’s a great connection to our strategic plan, social/emotional learning for students. You’d be surprised how many of our students have problems getting to school because of these problems,” said Devoll. “We want to be proactive and expose our students to this.”

Devoll said parents suggested the training in the fall, so it was not in the school budget.

With 790 students at a cost of $50 each, the school would need to raise $39,500 for all students to attend the training. So far, Devoll has received $1,000 through a grant and has applied for other grants.

An anonymous donor has agreed to match parents’ donations up to $5,000.

The training, conducted in small groups, will not take up class time, and students can opt out of it, explained Devoll.

If sufficient funds are not raised for all interested students, the school will offer the training first to seniors and then juniors.

The School Committee requested more information on the curriculum before approving it. Devoll said he will try to schedule a presentation by a member of the Kate Brown Educational Program at the next meeting.

In the meantime, committee members OK’ed fundraising for the program.
