Apartments to be converted to condos in Marion

A developer is seeking to build condominiums on the site of an existing Cottage Street apartment building.

On Tuesday, Chris Loranger received approval from Selectmen for additional sewer flow at 16 Cottage St. to accommodate three more bedrooms proposed for the site.

Currently, apartments are located in the building. The new building would house five condominium units.

The new building would be located in the existing structure’s footprint.

“We put a lot of effort to make sure [the building] adheres to town bylaws,” Loranger said. “We didn’t get a special permit and we are staying within current zoning regulations.”

Loranger said he’s noticed an increased demand in town for that type of housing.

“There are people in the community who want to get out of the flood zone and are just looking to downsize,” Loranger said.

Town Administrator Paul Dawson said Department of Public Works and sewer officials reviewed the proposal and found no problems.

Loranger said he would next apply for a building permit. He said he’s worked on a similar project at 48 South St.

Because he’s planning to move to town with his family, Loranger said he wanted to build within zoning bylaw confines and be a good neighbor.

“We’re doing the best job we possibly can,” he said. “I want to raise my family in this community.”
