Archaeological survey suggested for controversial solar site

The Massachusetts Historical Commission is recommending an extensive archaeology survey of the 10-acre site of a controversial solar project proposed on 620 New Bedford Road.

Selectman Richard Nunes shared with the board correspondence in which the commission asks for a survey to be conducted to locate, identify and evaluate any archaeological resources that may be unmarked, including gravestones.

"The purpose of the survey is to provide sufficient information to consider feasibility to mitigate any adverse impacts to important historical and archaeological resources in the project impact area," said the letter, according to Nunes.

This letter was sent to proponents of the solar project, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, the Rochester Historical Commission, the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe and the Planning Board.
