Art show takes over the hallways of Rochester Memorial School

What do exotic masks, animal eyes and hydrangeas all have in common? They were each the subject of art projects on display at Rochester Memorial School on Wednesday evening for the annual year-end art show.

The halls and several rooms of the school were filled with colorful and creative pieces. Art teacher Joanne Smith said she used books such as “Make Way for Ducklings” and artists such as Georgia O’Keefe as jumping off points to help her students dream up imaginative paintings, sculptures and pottery.

“I try to do a mixture of different things using different materials,” said Smith.

Smith said she does projects that are relevant for each age group she teaches.

One successful project this year with the sixth graders had them incorporating graphics and a quote that fit their personality. For another project, kids looked at an “Eye Spy” book with close-up images and then chose the eyes of different animals to draw.

“Since I ride horses and I love horses, I did a horse’s eyes,” said fifth grader Alyssa Clancy.

Students also created hydrangea images using paint bubbles and masks with plaster and gauze.

In conjunction with the art show, Library Media Specialist Ann Richard and Lisa Fuller of Plumb Library got kids ready for summer reading. This year’s theme is “Fizz Boom Read” and kids got to take home a few books for their own as well as sign up for the summer reading program.

“The kids in the school are so excited about reading. I just want them to keep going,” said Richard.

Students from Chris Williamson’s music class also performed for kids and parents.
