Ballots with errors sent to Rochester residents

May 10, 2024

ROCHESTER — Hundreds of Rochester residents received early absentee voting ballots that contained inaccurate instructions regarding how many candidates could be voted for in certain races.

The mailed ballot indicated in error that one vote could be provided each for the Library Trustee and Rochester School Committee races. Voters can select two candidates in each of those elections.

The ballot also misspelled Rochester School Committee incumbent candidate Robin Rounseville’s name.

Early voters in Rochester will be receiving a letter by mail containing instructions for how to proceed, according to Town Clerk Marjorie Barrows.

“Everything has been corrected,” Barrows said. “I have brand new ballots coming.”

According to the letter, those who have already submitted an early ballot can return the form in order to receive a corrected ballot.

Ballots from early voters who have already sent them in — and would prefer to leave them as is — will still be counted, according to the letter.

The ballot with errors can also still be used to vote for two candidates in the Library Trustee and Rochester School Committee races, according to the letter.

The programming of the voting machine will accept two votes for those races from the inaccurate ballots, Barrows said.

Early voters that have not yet returned their ballots can vote in person on election day — Wednesday, May 22 — at the Rochester Senior Center. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“We apologize for any confusion that was caused because of this oversight,” a May 10 press release from the Town Clerk’s office said. “The integrity of this and every election is our highest priority, and we are confident that the actions we have taken will protect the voters of our community.”
