Batter up! New batting cage coming to Old Hammondtown School
Old Hammondtown School’s Haley Field will soon have a new batting cage courtesy of Old Rochester Little League.
Bill Stark, secretary for the Little League, said the organization was formed by the Mattapoisett Youth Baseball Association and the Marion Recreational Baseball about a year and half ago.
The organization currently has 251 players aged six to 12.
Lambo Field is the only one in Mattapoisett that has a batting cage available to the league, which results in a lot of competition for the space, said Stark.
The addition of a cage at Haley Field would help more little league teams with their batting and pitching practice.
“Our goals is to raise good citizens,” said Stark. “We’re playing a great game and having fun doing it.”
The proposed batting cage will be funded entirely by the organization.
“We’re fortunate to have terrific support from the people in the town as well as through fundraising,” he said.
The Mattapoisett School Committee approved the addition on Monday, April 9 and commended the organization for its work.
Stark said, “There’s not much to this besides buying the batting cage and a little manual labor, which we’re not afraid of.”
