Beach wheelchair makes Silvershell more accessible

Aug 17, 2021

MARION — The Select Board accepted a donation of a floating wheelchair from the Friends of Marion Recreation on Aug. 17.

The chair, which arrived at Silvershell Beach last week, will be used to make the water accessible to those in need of a wheelchair. It can be signed out at the beach.

“They’ve had it in place for a little bit now,” Town Administrator Jay McGrail said. “It’s gone pretty well. It’s a nice piece of equipment for us to have.”

Select Board member John Waterman wondered whether the chair had gotten much use since it became available, but Administrative Assistant Donna Hemphill said she wasn’t sure because of how recently the wheelchair was received.

Hemphill did note, however, that the added walking path to the water has been getting great use at Silvershell.

“As for the mat, there’s been really, really good feedback,” she said.

And with the new wheelchair, Silvershell Beach is even more accessible.

“It’s a pretty cool piece of equipment,” McGrail said.
