Bike tour, music exhibit events with Sippican Historical Society

Aug 12, 2022

MARION – The Sippican Historical Society has a few events planned to round out the summer in Marion. From whaling captains to music history, they’re making sure there’s still plenty to explore throughout the month of August.

Join them for the temporary exhibition of a whaling captain’s logbook. Through the generosity of author and Marion resident Charles Poekel, Jr., the society is able to display the logbook of the Hibernia, a 19th-century whaling ship. Captain Thomas Brown, one of Mr. Poekel's ancestors, recorded three separate whaling voyages from 1835 to 1840, capturing the day-by-day activities of these properous expeditions. Whale-shaped stamps indicate successful days on board. Captain Brown's whaling log is now on loan for this temporary exhibition in the Maritime Room at the SHS through Sept. 15.

Charles Poekel's book, Vencedor, is on sale at the SHS Shop.

The kids’ historical bike tour will return on Aug. 22 for the second year in a row. Hosted by third-grader Greta Agnew, this bike tour of Marion Village will provide a guide to the town's most historic and interesting buildings. The tours will meet in the Memorial Garden behind the Sippican Historical Society building (27 Main Street) on Monday, Aug. 22 at 4:30 pm.

The one-hour tour is limited to 10 kids on bikes, so contact the Sippican Historical Society to reserve a spot.

The Marion music exhibit is now on display. In recognition of the 23rd season of the Buzzards Bay Musicfest, the historical society has mounted a pop up music exhibit spotlighting some of the music-making that has been presented in Marion through the decades.

See a selection of Sippican Choral Society programs, a concertina (a small hand-held instrument similar to an accordion), some photos of late 19th- and early 20th-century choral and instrumental music ensembles and a pair of band hats from the Sippican Band.

The society is eager to collect, preserve and exhibit more Marion music memorabilia. Contact them if you have programs, recordings, instruments or other items you'd like to donate.
