Bikers ride against cancer

Jun 2, 2013

Motorcyclists remembered a friend and raised money for Relay for Life on Sunday, June 2.

Residents gathered at the Ponderosa Sportsman’s Club for the fifth annual Bike Run to benefit the American Cancer Society. For the past few years, the event has been held in honor of Ernie Blais, who died of cancer in 2010.

Co-organizer Harold Joseph said the event began as a fundraiser amid co-workers at Rochester’s Southeastern Massachusetts Resource Recovery Facility (SEMASS).

Before the Bike Run, Joseph said only raffles and fundraisers were held.

“We’ve got a beautiful day today, a lot of help from people from the Ponderosa, and a lot of good food,” Joseph said.

Odd Johannessen, also a co-organizer, said all of the proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

To participate, riders donated $10. The run started at the Ponderosa and went to the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Plymouth. After the run, riders gathered back at the Ponderosa for raffles, music, and food.

Joe Blais, Ernie’s brother, participated on Sunday and arrived with his three-wheeled motorcycle. “There’s a lot of workers from SEMASS here. The support has been great,” he said.

The Relay for Life movement seeks to raise awareness and funds to save lives from cancer.
