Boat break-ins still a mystery in Mattapoisett
Mattapoisett experienced a run of boat-related thefts in August, according to Harbormaster Jill Simmons and Police Chief Mary Lyons. So far, police have no suspects.
Simmons said boats have been broken into as well as at least one dingy motor stolen. A former New Bedford police officer, Simmons said she’s seen similar incidents in New Bedford for the past several years.
“We never recovered a single motor.” she said. “They’ve been stealing stuff right and left from the Rhode Island line at least to Wareham and probably beyond.”
Lyons said GPS devises, fishing equipment and other items were stolen.
“Wherever there are electronics or expensive items, it’s a haven for thieves. It is common during boating season to have things stolen,” said the chief.
So far, no items have been recovered, though police are checking pawn shops.
Police were also notified that an inflatable boat was taken from Town Wharf and left at Crescent Beach in exchange for another boat. The second boat was then brought ashore after an apparent “joy ride.”
“I don’t know if it was kids or somebody just needed a ride home,” said Lyons.
She added that the incident was probably unrelated to the other break-ins.
