Bon appétit! Mattapoisett chows down at Taste of the Town
MATTAPOISETT — From crispy crab rangoons to savory slices of pizza, the 21st annual Taste of the Town had Mattapoisett residents lining up at Shipyard Park for dinner, desserts and more on Tuesday, July 15.
Mattapoisett Diner, Nick’s Homemade Pizza, On the Go, Oxford Creamery, The Inn on Shipyard Park, Shipyard Galley, The Slip, Turk’s Seafood, Uncle Jon’s Coffee and Ying Dynasty served food at the event, with six of the restaurants donating 100% of their profit to the Mattapoisett Woman’s Club scholarship fund.
“It’s one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” said Lois Ennis, event organizer and member of the Mattapoisett Woman’s Club.
Jayne Maranhas, of Mattapoisett’s On the Go Catering and Restaurant, served steaming chicken carbonara, shrimp scampi, oriental chicken salad and strawberry spring salad.
“It’s a great event. It’s a scholarship event. Our food is great, delicious. The folks in the area know On the Go very well, so they flock to this table to donate,” she said.
Heather Kelly worked the Mattapoisett Diner booth, labeling hearty spoonfuls of kale soup into to-go containers.
She described the Taste of the Town as a “fun and family oriented” event.
Mattapoisett resident Stacy Latt Savage has come to the Taste of the Town every year for the past 10 years.
“I just love to see what every restaurant’s going to offer, and I love it because they always bring out their best,” she said. “I just get so excited about the variety of food and just the hospitality and how excited everybody is about what they’re offering.”
Savage stated that she appreciates that the event “just brings community and people together” despite any outside hardships people may be experiencing.
“The restaurants are so generous with what they offer, and it just feels like a community,” she said.
As a veteran of the event, her pro-tip is to always come early to order the Oxford Creamery lobster rolls, which normally sell out within the first 30 minutes.
Taste of the Town is part of a series of events that lead up to Harbor Days, which are taking place on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20 this year.
Ennis describes the Taste of the Town as a “labor of love,” as she has been organizing the event for the past 20 years.
“We like to think about it as a big Mattapoisett event that’s good for everyone. [There’s] something here for everybody. It’s a blend of all people, all walks of life, all financial situations. It isn’t exclusive,” she said.
