Brandt Island Cove to get channel markers

Jul 29, 2016

Mattapoisett Harbormaster Jill Simmons is working to purchase and install eight channel markers to improve boater safety at Brandt Island Cove.

Simmons said a 100-acre aquaculture farm operating in the area should have had some markers but didn't. That farm is not currently operating, and the harbormaster said Brandt Island Cove boaters and residents have long requested navigational aids at the cove.

“They pay their fees like everyone else and get nothing for it,” Simmons said. “I'm trying to take care of them.”

Using approximately $3,500 from the waterways enterprise fund, which is funded by boating fees, Simmons is purchasing several aids, including a pair of lighted markers at the opening to the cove. The Harbormaster's Department also received a donation of three green channel markers that will be installed.

Simmons has already received state permits for the placement of the markers. She said they should arrive within two weeks and will be installed as soon as possible.
