Bulldogs cruise by Wareham Vikings 87-75
The ORR Bulldogs traveled to Wareham Tuesday night and left with a dominating 87-75 win over an undersized and inexperienced Vikings team that fought hard and scrambled until the final buzzer. Leading from the opening tip, the Bulldogs were able to overpower the Vikings in every aspect of the game with their size, athleticism and skill.
ORR brought its spotless 6-0 record into the game, and wasted no time showing why they are undefeated. The Bulldogs built a 9-point first quarter lead and expanded that to 21 at the half, 48-27. Seniors William and Evan Santos led the way in the first half, scoring 24 of their team's 48 points, with the left-handed William Santos garnering 16 points and Evan collecting 8.
William Santos drew the assignment of guarding Wareham's leading scorer, junior Jovahn Thomas, and was able to hold him check in the first half with just 8 points. Wareham senior Alex Rezendes did his best to keep Wareham close, scoring 13 first half points.
The Bulldogs blew the Vikings off the court in the third quarter, pushing their 21-point half-time lead to 30 points with 4:06 left. A Wareham timeout slowed the onslaught, and Wareham was able to recover enough to cut the lead back to 21 points by the end of the quarter. Wareham's scrambling made the game interesting in the fourth quarter, when the Vikings were able to claw back to 12 points with just under a minute left in the game.
After his cool first half, Wareham’s Thomas got hot, scoring 12 points in the third quarter, and then exploding in the fourth quarter to score another 17. The Vikings rallied behind him, but on this night 37 points wasn't enough to bring the Vikings all the way back.
Bulldog coach Steve Carvalho felt the game was never in doubt. Responding to the 12-point final margin, Carvalho said, “the game was never that close. We made some mistakes at the end that we will clean up.”
When he was asked, given Wareham's past dominance over all the other South Coast Conference basketball teams, if he could remember ever having a 30-point lead on a Wareham team, he paused for a second and then admitted with a wry smile, “No, I definitely can't remember that ever happening.”
ORR boys play next at home against Dighton-Rehoboth on Friday, Jan. 8.
