Bulldogs topple Vikings

Despite the final score of the game, a 6-2 victory, Old Rochester coach Eric Labonte was frustrated with his team’s play.

“I’m happy with the win. I’m not happy with the way we played, though,” said Labonte. “I’d take a win off of bad play over a loss off of good play any day.”

The Bulldogs were playing a Wareham team that entered the game with a .500 record.

The Bulldogs came out strong with goals by left-winger Kam Silvia and center Jeremy Lawton. These goals came within 30 seconds of each other about midway through the first period.

However, the team quickly gave those goals back before Lawton scored again on a 5-on-3 advantage with 9 seconds left in the period.

“I think they took this team lightly,” Labonte said. “There was kind of false hope when we came out and scored two quick goals. Then they tied it up, and in the second intermission, we just talked about getting pucks in deep and not turning it over at their blue line.”

Labonte labeled his team’s defensive effort as being “non-existent” in the first period. However, the team was to turn things around by having one skater pursue the puck for a few moments until help came.

“It kind of opened things up and calmed the kids down,” said Labonte. “Really throughout the game, though, we were over pursuing.”

Wareham coach Bryan Erikson said Old Rochester’s speed was a mismatch for his team. So, Labonte spent much of the game attempting to make the offensive tempo contrast the defensive tempo.

“I tell the kids in the offensive zone, it’s fast and furious. But in the defensive zone, it’s slow and relaxed,” said Labonte.

Old Rochester’s record moves to 10-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play. It plays Dartmouth on Jan. 29.

“Next week, we got Dartmouth and Plymouth South, so if we don’t skate in that game, we’re going to get blown out,” said Labonte.
