Buzzards Bay Coalition received approval from the Mattapoisett Selectmen to pursue grant funding that would result go towards 16.6 acres of land for the town.

The land, located on the Mattapoisett River and adjacent to the Coalition’s 220-acre acquisition on Acushnet Road, will be given to the town once enough money is raised to offset its $760,000 value.

“The source of funding is myriad,” said the Coalition’s Land Protection Director Allan Decker. “Ultimately no town funds would go to make this acquisition.”

Water and Sewer Superintendent Nick Nicholson said the land would not be suitable for a well, but would help protect a nearby town well.

The Coalition will seek a $240,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Decker said the group had already received a $75,000 grant.
