Buzzard's Bay Musicfest brings free concert series to Marion for 16th year
If a free concert sounds like music to your ears, then Tabor Academy is the place to be this week.
The Buzzard’s Bay Musicfest offers four days of free orchestra and chamber concerts with musicians that are nationally and internationally recognized.
“They come every year and come just for expenses,” said Sally Madison, Chair of the Musicfest Board. “They all know each other and they love to come here.”
Madison said some musicians have made the trek to Marion all 16 years of the event, which started when patrons of the retired maestro Russell Patterson wanted to help him start a free music festival in the Cape Cod area.
“He went all over the area to find the venue with the best acoustics and found it at Fireman Performing Arts Center at Tabor,” said Madison.
Each year Patterson chooses pieces from the classical music cannon and sends them to the musicians, who won’t practice together until the week of the concert.
But the short rehearsal time doesn’t faze local flutist and Berklee College of Music professor Wendy Rolfe.
After a decade of playing in the festival she said, “When we get back together everything works well in the section. It’s as though we were just playing together the day before. We have a family now.”
That family atmosphere is a crucial part of the festival.
Madison said musicians from outside the area are housed in private homes, often the same ones each year.
The hosts even become a little possessive, said Madison. “You better not take their musician from them. They become like members of the family.”
Both Madison and Rolfe said they value being able to make music accessible to people in their zip code.
Rolfe, who often plays in international venues, said, “It’s wonderful to bring chamber music and orchestra music to the community of Marion, and to be able to share what we do professionally in my own town.”
The concerts run from Wednesday, July 11 through Sunday, July 15.
