Buzzards Bay Regatta comes to a close
Tri-town sailors joined competitors from across the country for the Buzzards Bay Regatta held over the Aug. 8 weekend.
Sunday morning started with wet and windy conditions for the last day of the annual race, though the rain subsided and allowed for a decent day of sailing.
Despite the tricky conditions, event organizer Mary Ellen DeFrias said the regatta as a whole went well.
“It was a successful event,” she said. “We hope that next year, everyone will come back.”
William Berry, a member of Marion’s Beverly Yacht Club, finished 15th in the Laser series. In the Club 420 race, tri-town sailors Caroline Downey and Maura Lonergan, finished 31st out of 152 boats while Nicholas Memoli and Emily Wang finished 31st in the same category.
Most of the talk on Sunday afternoon at the New Bedford Yacht Club involved the conditions.
“It was windy out there sand a little choppy, but it was fun,” said Noble Reynoso of San Diego, who along with partner Jack McGraw of San Francisco won the 420 class. “It’s a lot like what we get at home.”
“We didn’t do as well as we thought we would, but it was OK,” said Clara Brown of Minnesota, who raced in the 420 class.
“It was really windy,” added her partner and captain Josh Sullivan. “There were some steep waves, and it was very wet.”
420 class judge Roy Jansen said there weren’t any issues to report with the younger group of sailors.
“It was an enthusiastic, well-behaved group to work with,” he said. “For the people who finished near the top, this was a big deal for them.”
One notable finisher from the New Bedford Yacht Club was Mark Bear of South Dartmouth, who skippered his boat “Pork Chop” to a win in the Laser Series, which involves only one sailor per boat. Olympic hopeful Christine Neville of Newport finished third in the event, and world champion Peter Shope came in fourth.
“Mark Bear is a phenomenal sailor,” said DeFrias. “I’m happy he did well. That’s a competitive fleet he was in.”
The “Wild Things” crew out of Winthrop, who raced in the J109 series, was upbeat following Sunday’s races.
“Nobody fell off the boat today,” said Holly Ripley-Boyd, “so it was a successful day.”
“It has been great,” added DeFrias of the event. “There was some fantastic racing out there. The 43rd Buzzards Bay Regatta is in the books.”
