Buzzards Bay Sail & Power Squadron to offer fall boating seminars, courses
Buzzards Bay Sail & Power Squadron, a local boating organization part of United States Power Squadron (America’s Boating Club), is presenting a series of seminars and courses this fall.
America’s Boating Course will be the last basic boating course for 2024. The overview course is nationally approved through the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and is accepted by Massachusetts for the issuance of boating safety certificates.
The course “covers the basics of operating a boat safely, including rules of the road, aids to navigation, required equipment, and boat handling techniques,” according to Buzzards Bay Sail & Power Squadron.
The course is $65 per person, and classes meet Sept. 17 and 24 and Oct. 1 and 8 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. An exam will be held Oct. 13.
A September seminar series will cover basic coastal navigation, navigating with electronics and anchoring. Those seminars meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 9, 11, 16 and 30 and range in price from $30 to $40 for members and $40 to $50 for nonmembers.
The organization will also be offering a weather course that meets Thursday evenings from September to the beginning of November.
“The course focuses on how weather systems form, behave, move, and interact with one another and reflects the availability of all sorts of weather reports and forecasts on the internet,” according to the Buzzards Bay Sail & Power Squadron.
The course is $75 for members and $150 for nonmembers.
Lastly, a marine communication systems course will be offered Wednesday evenings through September and October.
“Radio history and spectrum definitions are presented along with radio types the student should be familiar with to choose the best communication methods for their situation,” according to the Buzzards Bay Sail & Power Squadron. “Additional chapters cover GMDSS, FCC rules and regulations, high seas radio, and troubleshooting of radio installations.”
The course is $90 for members and $190 for nonmembers.
