Camp Massasoit wraps up summer, looks to future

Camp Massasoit wraps up its last camp of the season on Aug. 23. And while the summer staffers will be heading back to their college campuses soon and kids will be trading in their board shorts for backpacks, Executive Director Joe Marciszyn believes everyone will take away some positive memories from their time at the YMCA.

This year approximately 2,000 kids came through the camp, participating in sailing, archery, canoeing, arts and crafts, and myriad other activities.

Marciszyn said he wants to add new things to the camp every year to keep it fresh.

“We’re trying to set up more programs, so it’s not one year and you feel like you’ve done it all,” he said.

Although he’s only been on the job since the spring, Marciszyn and his staff added a number of things to this year’s program, including a stage on the lawn, a paddleboat, and a banana boat. The camp also had it’s first rock concert and added 30 minutes of reading time on “Pioneer Island” to help prevent the summer reading slide.

Getting families involved has been another focus of Marciszyn.

“We’ve been doing a lot with our Facebook page to engage our parents,” he said.

The camp also invited parents to several family nights throughout the summer.

On Thursday evening, the campers became counselors for their families and toured them around the grounds. For one night, the campers got to be the bosses.

“You’ve got to do whatever he tells you,” Marciszyn yells across the lawn to a dad jokingly.

The director said fundraising will be a focus for the next few months to help develop the camp’s offerings, including a new outdoor playground. The YMCA will hold a clam boil on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. More information will be available soon, said Marciszyn.
